    Description

Temple rubbings from Thailand are authentic images created by placing rice paper over ancient temple bas relief stone carvings, and rubbing charcoal or oiled cloths over the designs. These two rubbings depict scenes from the Ramayana, an epic tale of the hero Rama and his battle to rescue his wife Sita from the Demon King. One picture is Rama and Sita together, and the other is Rama and his ally Hanuman the White Monkey King on a chariot en route to rescue Rama's wife Sita from the Demon King. These were probably created from stone or marble carvings at the Temple of the Emerald Buddha.  Rubbings are no longer allowed to be made, as the practice was damaging the carvings. Now only reproductions can be made, so the value of originals increases.  These rubbings are probably from the '60's.  The rice paper rubbings have been mounted on cardboard with adhesive. There are some minor stains and fading, but no creases, and matted in dark blue inside white faux bamboo frames. Measures 26" x 24.5"
