Vintage 1992 HANDMADE THAI DEMON KHAN DANCE FULL FACE MASK
DARK GREEN, GOLD WITH SIMULATED IVORY TUSKS.
Hangable wall art.
Handmade in Thailand.

Weight: Approximately 1 pound, 8 ounces.
This is a full, life-size, originally open backed, handmade face mask.
There is a fitted, black painted wood piece within the back opening of the mask to accommodate wall hanging.
There is a small hole centered up from the midpoint for a hook or nail.
Condition: New (as in unused and has never been on display) Excellent.
However please read the description and view the photo to make your own quality assessment as I am not an expert.

I purchased this in the spring of 1992 at a stop at a local artisan shop during a trip throughout Thailand while working on a television show.
This is one of three.
The other two are also on eBay within my listings.
It has been in climate controlled dark storage facility for 29 years.
It has always been in a smoke-free and odor-free
Some surface dirt which I decided to leave as is because it should be professionally handled and cleaned.
The colors and finish remain intact and vibrant.
No cracks.
No marks.
There may be very few, if any, missing glued mirror pieces but I think they are all there.
Very slight surface wear in a few places.
Made from layers of paper mache and plaster.
Real gold leaf, paint, & colored and mirrored glass were applied to elaborate the head and facial details.
Incredibly appointed and detailed.
The two simulated ivory tusks are intact and secure.
The gold ears are able to be removed.
They fit within the sides of the mask to flare out the sides in the tradition of the historic accuracy of this mask.

Thai Khon masked drama is derived from Indian temple rituals and dancing and draws its story line from the Ramakian, the Thai version of the Indian epic Ramayana.  Khon was originally developed as an exclusively Royal entertainment, popular at the courts of Ayutthaya and later of Rattanakosin.
