Benjarong also called royal pottery is a porcelain whose name literally means "five colours" in the Pâli language.
For decoration, a repeating geometric or floral pattern is used on a colourful background. The glazed appearance creates a highlight and brings relief to the room. The manufacturing process is long and delicate, with the piece being baked between each application of colour. Gold is also used for decoration and is the theme of the latest cuisine.
The first traces of benjarong date back to the Chinese Ming dynasty (1368-1644)
The benjarong technique was invented precisely during the reign of Emperor Xuande (1425-1435) in Zhejiang province and became popular during the reign of Emperor Chenghua (1464-1487). Originally, Benjarong porcelain is exclusively reserved for imperial use
The Benjarong arrived in Thailand about 600 years ago when a Chinese princess married a member of the Siamese dynasty, bringing her porcelain with her. For several generations, benjarong porcelain for the Siamese royal family was made in China. The Kingdom of Siam began producing its own porcelain when it discovered kaolin as a major constituent of porcelain and brought in Chinese artists. The first benjarong porcelains made in Thailand date from the reign of Rama V who authorised their use by the aristocracy and some wealthy merchants. Only recently can anyone purchase these porcelains thanks to the permission of the late King Bhumibol (Rama IX)
