ANTIQUE LAHU BASKET, THAILAND
An old Shi Lahu hilltribe basket that I bought in the early 80s At Mae Sai, on the border with Burma in, Northern Thailand. It was pretty dangerous to go trekking then, the hills were alive with bandits, & opium smugglers, & when we went on a four day trek in 1978, our guide carried an M16 which he insisted would "Klua kamoy" which means scare robbers!. There were lots of poppy fields often guarded by tribal women in wonderful dress, often with an M16 at their side. The villages were all bamboo structures, & bamboo was used for cups, mats, walls, & the most beautifully crafted baskets. This basket was used to store clothes, & would be excellent in the bathroom for towels or such.. It has a repair on one side otherwise in good condition, & is 15" tall by 16" x 8" & has two layers of woven bamboo..
